Mcx Ar Pistol - SIG Sauer's MCX might just be the world's most modular battle rifle. You don't hear much about them, but the list of professionals who rely on MCX for their missions reads like a who's who of top counter-terrorism units around the world.

A lesser known fact about the MCX Virtus is that thanks to USSOCOM, the MCX underwent more thorough testing than the M16 during the development phase or procurement process. Since its inception, MCX has gone through a series of improvements to shape itself into the platform it is today. Unlike most competitors who make a product and leave it as is for life, regardless of problems that arise, SIG is constantly making changes based on testing, consumer feedback, and research and development. When it finds areas for improvement, engineers and product managers don't wait until the next model year.

Thanks to the modularity of the MCX, different arm lengths and options are available for the precise positional requirements of field shooting to give the support arm the right amount of real estate and barrel level of protection.

The best way to improve a product is to stop it, take notes, and then see what happened. SIG did this with MCX in collaboration with SOCOM. During the development phase, at least 10 rifles were sent to the facility, which proceeded to fire 50,000 rounds through each sample; Record all malfunctions and errors before proceeding with destructive testing. After their evaluation, the tool was sent back to the SIG along with all the data generated. SIG took this data and began modifying the parts, and in the process put an additional 50,000 rounds through each of the rifles, which returned from there before further improvements.

There is no weapon today that can withstand such punishment. In fact, 99 percent will never see a bit of that much shooting. The MCX you see is the result of collaboration and hard work.

The MCX is designed to be parts compatible with the AR-15, so new rifle owners can take advantage of AR's extensive aftermarket support. Triggers, magazines and pistol grips that fit the AR also fit the MCX. The safety, bolt catch and front assist are all in one place, making it easy to switch from one weapon to another.

The MCX lower offers many of the features found in higher-end AR lower receivers, including ambidextrous controls (no bolt release), a deep flared magazine well, and a matching trigger. The bolt handle is enlarged, which is nice, and is fully compatible with lower AR dials, most triggers and pistol grips.

The differences in performance between the MCX and the AR-15 far outweigh the similarities. The MCX uses a piston system instead of the direct trigger mechanism found in the AR-15. Piston systems have been retrofitted on ARs for over a decade, but the SIG system moves the recoil spring behind the ball of the bolt carrier and places it in the upper receiver.

Relocating the recoil spring (bump spring) to the upper receiver allows the MCX to have a side-folding stock instead of the folding stock found on the AR, making the MCX much more portable. The bolt carrier, known as the carriage system, has also been shortened as it no longer has to pass through the buffer tube or receiver extension.

Unlike the AR-15, the MCX also has a quick-change detachable barrel system that allows the owner to quickly change barrel lengths, calibers and shoulder lengths, styles and stocks. All you need is a T27 torx bit and a regular inch torque wrench.

The three most significant changes to the MCX over the years have been the bolt, gas system length, and barrel profile. Along with this, several other improvements have been added, including a new M-LOK handguard that more firmly secures the upper receiver, a stronger lower-profile charging handle, and a new two-stage adjustment trigger.

Only a properly equipped MCX can fire 5.56x45mm, .300 Blackout, and now 7.62x39mm. The platform can be quickly configured from a short, “silent film” .300 BLK PDW to a 16-inch 5.56-barreled specialty rifle capable of engaging targets out to 800 yards, and any imaginable configuration in between.

At the top, real technology comes into play, and many of the MCX's advantages are evident in the AR-15. The steel chamber track eliminates all but wear on the upper receiver; a steel serrated edge prevents the aluminum magazine from being scratched when fed with certain types of ammo, and the charging handle latch is held in place by a simple groove in the aluminum magazine, preventing further wear in that area. All of these parts are fully custom fit/interchangeable, greatly extending life in the military, law enforcement, or firearms world. Even the forward assist is user replaceable, but I've never heard of it breaking. But it's reassuring to know that it can be swapped out or swapped out for a low-profile deflector like the one found on the MCX Rattler.

The MCX operates using a revolutionary recoil assembly that does not rely on a receiver extension like traditional AR-15/M4 platforms. Instead of a leveling tube, there's a Mil-Std 1913 interface that allows the lower receiver to accept many stocks and mounts that can be telescoped and/or folded.

The bolt carrier ball/carriage is advanced in that it uses dual springs (but only needs one for reliable operation) and is shortened in length. The original MCX used a bolt backward compatible with the AR-15 bolt, but the Virtus has no bolt rear and one long, beefy barrel with plenty of meat surrounding the chamber bore. The extra weight significantly extends the life of the bolt. The bolt teeth feature the radius valley between the teeth found on Knights Armament rifles. Radial cracks in screw teeth are less likely to crack or crack because there are no sharp edges or stress points to crack.

The bolt also has slightly elongated teeth with angled serrated landing surfaces. The rear of the barrel is cut at an angle to allow more contact with the barrel extension. This makes retracting the Virtus gears much more difficult. By simply lengthening the teeth, the life of the screw can be extended by about 30 percent. As such, SIG claims a bolt life of over 20,000 rounds, more than double that of an AR-15 bolt. In fact, SIG says the Virtus doesn't need to replace any parts for at least 20,000 rounds, something the AR-15 certainly can't do.

The MCX Virtus 11.5-inch 5.56 pistol is the perfect size, weight, and capability for us, and should be the standard model in our opinion. The balance of the platform is spot on, and we're constantly amazed at how steady it shoots out of hand. It just sits there in circles.

This MCX was tested at 50 yards with a red dot sight and was representative of what you would expect when so equipped; The platform is capable of the highest level of accuracy with magnified optics and Black Hills 77 grain OTM ammunition. In fact, loaded with Black Hills ammo, I personally witnessed the MCX IPSC B/C zone steel 16-inch barrel at 1,472 yards, four out of five shots and a repeat print. -3/4 MOA five shot group at 100 yards.

To say that the gas system is crowned is an understatement. Rapid shots almost destroy the image of our eyes, and the rise of the chimney is almost zero. Due to its modularity, durability, shootability, and backward compatibility of parts with the AR-15, the Virtus can be our go-to gun. Loaded with the right ammo, there's little the rifle can't do.

The balance of the 11.5-inch Virtus has to be felt to be fully appreciated. This, combined with an adjustable gas and recoil system, creates an incredibly flexible, flat shooting platform that rewards the user with shooting capabilities rarely found even in boutique AR-15s.
